"Senate Education Committee Discusses Results of Jordanian Students in International Assessments

Amman – Media and Communication – The Education and Teaching Committee in the Jordanian Senate, chaired by Senator Dr. Wajih Owais, held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the results of Jordanian students in the international assessments "TIMSS, PISA, PIRLS."

Owais stated that the discussions, which involved educational experts Dr. Abdullah Ababneh and Dr. Dweqan Obaidat, aimed to explore the reasons behind the decline in the performance of school students in these international assessments, compared to previous years.

He emphasized the importance of improving teacher training to enhance the educational environment and student results in future tests, and of developing a new plan for continuous and well-structured follow-up on both education and teachers. Special focus should be placed on the early stages of education, particularly pre-school education.

For his part, Ababneh presented the performance of Jordanian students in the international assessments "TIMSS, PISA, PIRLS," which cover mathematics, science, and literacy, in order to assess the progress or decline and the reasons behind these trends, and to explore ways to improve performance in future assessments.

He pointed out that Jordan has been participating in the "TIMSS" international assessment since the 1990s without interruption. Initially, Jordan ranked in the middle range among participating countries. However, recent results have shown a noticeable decline in Jordan's ranking. He also explained that the "PIRLS" test, in which Jordan is participating for the first time, is an international assessment of reading skills for fourth-grade students.

Obaidat, on the other hand, noted that the test results revealed a decline in the education levels for fourth and eighth graders in mathematics, science, and literacy in 2023. He stressed the importance of focusing on critical thinking skills and exerting efforts to develop teacher performance and teaching methods.
