The Health, Environment, and Population Committee Discusses the State of Pharmaceuticals in Jordan with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association

The Senate Health, Environment, and Population Committee, chaired by Senator Dr. Yassin Al-Hasban, met today, Wednesday, with the Jordan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, headed by Tariq Darwazah, to discuss the state of the pharmaceutical sector in Jordan and the challenges it faces.

This meeting, as part of the committee's legislative and oversight role, was attended by Dr. Khaled Harb, CEO of Dar Al Dawa and Vice Chairman of the Jordan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, and Dr. Abdel Moneim Al Ali, CEO of the International Pharmaceutical Company, a member of the Jordan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association.

Al-Hasban emphasized that the meeting stemmed from the importance of keeping pace with developments in the pharmaceutical sector to strengthen the national economy and the need to align the association's vision with economic modernization, contributing to enhancing drug security and achieving sustainability in healthcare.

He pointed out that the committee seeks to identify the obstacles facing the local pharmaceutical industry and work to overcome them in cooperation with relevant authorities, especially legislative bodies.

For his part, Darwazeh gave a comprehensive presentation on the state of the pharmaceutical industry in Jordan, noting that Jordan is one of the most prominent pharmaceutical manufacturing centers in the region. He explained that the local pharmaceutical industry contributes significantly to the provision of medicines to both the public and private sectors, noting that Jordan has achieved a global position in the pharmaceutical industry through its application of international standards in the pharmaceutical industry.

Darwazeh reviewed the most prominent challenges facing the pharmaceutical sector, emphasizing the importance of creating a legislative and regulatory environment that supports the local pharmaceutical industry, ensuring its continuity and ability to compete regionally and internationally. The Secretary-General of the Association, Dr. Hanan Al-Saboul, noted that there are 30 pharmaceutical companies in Jordan, and these companies own 20 factories distributed in 11 countries outside Jordan. They employ approximately 7,000 direct employees and 50,000 indirect employees in related sectors. She noted that Jordan is considered one of the largest export markets for Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United States, the UAE, and Algeria.
