Senate Education Committee Discusses Healthcare and Medical Education Project

Amman, April 14 - The Senate Education Committee, chaired by Senator Dr. Wajih Owais, met today, Monday, with Dr. Mahmoud Al-Sarhan, Executive Director of the Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education Project.

Dr. Owais stated that the meeting was held to review the project's developments and its objectives for enhancing healthcare in the Kingdom.

He explained that the committee's objective during the meeting was to gain a deeper understanding of the project's objectives and the extent to which it contributes to enhancing medical education, the policies implemented to change traditional concepts and introduce modern technologies to the medical field, and to review the expected outcomes upon completion of the project.

For his part, Dr. Al-Sarhan reviewed the project's main themes and objectives, noting that it was implemented in partnership with the Saudi Jordanian Investment Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, with an investment volume estimated at approximately $400 million.

He added that the project will contribute to developing and strengthening the company's investment partnerships to achieve attractive and sustainable returns in the long term and develop investment opportunities with various sectors in the Kingdom and the region.

He explained that the project is distinguished by its quality and knowledge, enhancing academic outcomes. Graduates will be qualified in terms of knowledge and the transfer of global expertise through partnerships with two of the world's most prominent institutions in the fields of healthcare and medical education: the University of London School of Medicine as an academic partner, and the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center as a medical partner.

He also emphasized that the project will contribute to enriching medical and academic knowledge and expertise, improving the quality of healthcare and medical education, stimulating medical tourism, and providing access to distinguished medical education aimed at graduating a new generation of doctors and researchers, enhancing medical culture in the region.

He explained the project's uniqueness, given its geographical location. It serves a residential area in the south of the capital and the governorates within that region, serving them medically and meeting the local community's needs for sustainable development. The total area of ​​the healthcare project buildings is estimated at more than 110,000 square meters, and the project is expected to provide numerous quality job opportunities in various medical and scientific specialties.

Dr. Al-Sarhan said that the project will include the Kingdom University for Medical Sciences with a capacity of 600 seats, at a rate of 100 seats per academic year, and the Kingdom University Hospital with a capacity of 330 beds, 72 outpatient clinics, and a specialized children's hospital, in addition to five centers of medical excellence for the most prevalent diseases in Jordan and the region in the specialties of heart, digestive system, bones, brain and nerves, and tumors, along with four research centers in genetics and targeted medicine, stem cells, bioinformatics, and health systems, with the aim of focusing on advanced scientific research, as a percentage of the hospital's revenues will be allocated for scientific research and development purposes.
