Senate Health Committee Meets with Minister of Environment

Amman, May 20 - The Senate Health, Environment, and Population Committee, chaired by Senator Dr. Yassin al-Husban, discussed the ministry's strategy and work mechanism with Minister of Environment Dr. Muawiyah al-Radaydeh.

Senator al-Husban said during the meeting on Tuesday that the meeting aimed to review the environmental situation in Jordan, examine the challenges facing the ministry, and explore the possibility of developing radical solutions to those challenges.

He addressed several topics, most notably the scarcity of water resources, solid waste management in recycling plants, the lack of community awareness regarding waste sorting, and the problem of flying insects, especially in tourist areas. He emphasized the importance of incorporating environmental education into school curricula.

For his part, Minister al-Radaydeh said that the ministry's strategic pillars are part of the economic modernization vision, most notably the green economy and green urban development.

He explained that several initiatives have emerged from the strategy, most notably the development of policies and the stimulation of the transition to a green economy in the economic and social sectors, environmentally sound waste management, and the promotion of the concept of smart agriculture and nature-based solutions.

Al-Radaydeh emphasized that Jordan was among the first countries to adopt renewable energy, which has helped improve air quality through the shift to electric vehicles.

He also highlighted the issue of waste management through investing in recycling, with three major recycling facilities run by Jordanian businessmen. He also highlighted the control of "random dumping," noting that there are 22 landfills in the Kingdom.

He noted the Refugees and Climate Initiative, launched by Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, which has been joined by nearly 60 countries around the world. He noted that the integrity of ecosystems is a natural heritage linked to our history and a responsibility the Ministry bears.
